Certified stones

A certificate does not make a stone better — it makes it verifiable. Below are the listings that carry a laboratory report, and an explanation of what to look at in one.

What to look at in a report

Laboratory and number. A report from an unrecognised laboratory, with no verifiable number, is a sheet of paper.

Natural origin. The essential line: natural stone or synthetic. Everything else is secondary.

Treatment. Heat is normal market practice for many stones, but it must be named. Undisclosed treatment is a reason to ask questions.

Geographic origin. It affects price considerably and is not always determinable: some reports honestly state “undetermined”.
