Stones for earrings

A pair is a separate piece of work. Two stones must agree on tone, saturation and proportion — otherwise the difference is immediate, even at identical weight.

What makes a pair a pair

Tone and saturation matter more than weight. The eye will not catch 0.1 ct; it catches half a tone instantly.

Symmetry of outline. In hearts and pears a pair falls apart on shape long before it falls apart on colour.

The same cut. Even at matching colour, a different crown height gives different brilliance, and one earring reads as duller.

Asymmetry is also a decision. Two different stones in a pair of earrings is now a deliberate choice — single listings work well for it.
