Stones for a ring

A ring is worn every day, so the centre stone is not chosen on colour alone. These are the listings whose shape and table suit an everyday setting.

What matters in a ring

Table and depth. A tall stone is beautiful but catches on clothing and hair. For an everyday ring a shallower seat wins.

Shape. Cushions and ovals forgive an imprecise seat. Pears and hearts demand a true axis: one degree out is visible on the hand.

Hardness. This matters more than for earrings or a pendant, because a hand touches everything. Softer stones are better kept for pieces worn occasionally.

Metal. Warm stones open up in yellow gold, cool ones in white. Not a rule, but a good place to start the conversation with a jeweller.
